Biomass Industry Update | Global Biofuel Output Could Rise Nearly 70% by 2030
Date:2026-09-23
Global biofuel output is projected to increase by nearly 70% by 2030 compared with 2025, according to a new study by Chatham House and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The growth is being driven by energy-security concerns, higher biofuel blending targets and rising interest in alternatives to fossil fuels. Countries including Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and the United States, alongside the EU, are moving toward higher blending targets.
But rapid growth also raises a critical question: where will the sustainable feedstock come from?
The study estimates that meeting proposed blending targets could require an additional 36 million hectares of land by 2030, while highlighting agricultural residues and other waste-based feedstocks as potential alternatives that can reduce pressure on land, food production and water resources.
For ASEAN, abundant agricultural residues, forestry resources and organic waste could create opportunities across the biomass value chain — from feedstock and processing to biogas, biofuels, heat and power.
