Biomass Industry Update Indonesia Targets 3.65 Million Tonnes of Biomass Supply

Date:2026-09-08

Indonesia is planning to expand the use of biomass in power generation, with PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) targeting 3.65 million tonnes of biomass supply to 52 coal-fired power plants in 2026. The target represents an increase of around 50% compared with the 2.35 million tonnes supplied in 2025.

The development highlights a broader opportunity for Indonesia’s biomass sector. As cofiring demand grows, the focus is shifting from biomass availability to reliable, consistent and scalable supply.

PLN EPI is strengthening its upstream biomass ecosystem through the development of subhubs, hubs and main hubs, alongside improvements in biomass quality and supply infrastructure. These efforts are intended to support the quantity, quality and continuity of biomass deliveries to power plants.

From an industry perspective, the next stage of biomass development may depend not only on the availability of agricultural and plantation residues, but also on the ability to collect, process, transport and deliver biomass that meets power plant requirements.

This creates opportunities across the wider biomass value chain, including biomass fuel production, feedstock collection, processing equipment, logistics, quality management and biomass power generation.

The development is also among the key topics followed by the ASEAN Biomass Energy Expo (ABEE).

The expo will bring together companies and industry professionals working across biomass fuels, biomass power generation, biogas, biochar and biomass utilisation in Southeast Asia and beyond.
