Indonesia is taking a broader approach to its waste-to-energy strategy.
With planned Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facilities expected to handle only around 22% of the country’s waste generation, the Indonesian government is now promoting pyrolysis technology as a complementary solution. Pilot projects are already underway across Bogor, Semarang, Bekasi and Jakarta, with the technology expected to help address an additional share of the country’s waste management challenge.
But the bigger picture goes beyond waste management.
Indonesia is increasingly exploring ways to turn waste into energy and value-added products, opening the door to technologies including pyrolysis, gasification, biofuels and other waste-to-energy solutions.
For ASEAN’s biomass and bioenergy industry, this signals an important shift:
Waste is no longer simply a disposal challenge — it is becoming an energy resource.
As ASEAN accelerates its transition toward more efficient waste and biomass utilization, opportunities are emerging across pyrolysis, gasification, biofuels and waste-to-energy.
The next phase of ASEAN bioenergy growth may not only come from biomass — but from unlocking the energy value of waste.
