Biomass Is Moving Beyond Power Generation
Date:2026-07-13
Amazon recently announced an investment in GranBio, a biotechnology company developing advanced biomass conversion technologies. The investment will help accelerate the commercialization of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other low-carbon fuels produced from forestry residues, agricultural waste, and construction wood waste.
These fuels can be used with existing engines and fuel infrastructure, offering practical decarbonization solutions for hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and long-haul transport.
Beyond the investment itself, the announcement highlights several important trends shaping the bioenergy industry:
Biomass is moving up the value chain.
Beyond heat and power generation, biomass is increasingly being used as a key feedstock for advanced biofuels, including SAF and renewable diesel.
Corporate decarbonization is accelerating innovation.
As companies work toward net-zero targets, investment in low-carbon fuel supply chains and advanced biomass technologies continues to grow.
ASEAN is well positioned for future growth.
Southeast Asia is rich in biomass resources—including palm residues, rice husks, sugarcane bagasse, and wood processing residues—providing a strong foundation for the development of advanced biofuels.
As advanced biofuels gain momentum worldwide, the spotlight is shifting from resource availability to value creation. For ASEAN, this presents a timely opportunity to convert its rich biomass resources into long-term industrial and commercial advantages.
