ABEE Market Insight: World Bank Supports Thailand’s Natural Capital Accounting Initiative

Date:2026-06-16

The World Bank has expressed its support for Thailand’s efforts to develop a Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) framework, aimed at improving the measurement of the economic value of forests, water resources, wetlands, and other natural assets.

According to Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), the country’s future growth opportunities are expected to be driven by several key sectors, including sustainable agriculture, bioeconomy and biotechnology, sustainable tourism, and nature-based solutions.

The initiative highlights a growing recognition that natural resources are not only environmental assets but also critical economic drivers. By incorporating natural capital into national accounting systems, Thailand aims to strengthen climate resilience, improve resource efficiency, and support long-term sustainable development.

In parallel, Thailand continues to advance its low-carbon development strategy through renewable energy deployment, industrial decarbonization, carbon market development, and green finance initiatives. These efforts reflect a broader regional trend across ASEAN, where countries are accelerating the transition toward more sustainable and climate-resilient economic models.
