Bangkok’s Nong Khaem Waste-to-Energy project highlights how Southeast Asia is increasingly transforming urban waste management challenges into sustainable energy solutions.
Once a conventional landfill site, the project has been developed into a fully integrated waste-to-energy facility, reflecting a broader regional shift toward circular economy practices and low-carbon infrastructure development.
The project demonstrates several key industry directions:
• Waste-to-energy as a scalable solution for urban waste management and renewable power generation
• Application of digital technologies, including AI-driven environmental monitoring, to improve operational efficiency and emissions control
• Growing emphasis on technology localization, supported by long-term workforce training and capacity building
• Strengthening contribution to ASEAN’s circular economy and sustainable urban development agenda
As Southeast Asia accelerates its transition toward low-carbon fuels and sustainable energy systems, biomass energy, waste-to-energy technologies, and green fuel innovation are becoming increasingly important pillars of the region’s future energy landscape.
In this context, regional platforms for collaboration and knowledge exchange are playing a key role in connecting industry stakeholders across the value chain.
