ABEE Industry Insight|Global Biomass Industry Enters the Era of Green Fuel and Circular Carbon Economy
Date:2026-05-08
The global biomass industry is undergoing a structural transformation, moving beyond traditional power generation applications and gradually entering a new phase centered on green fuels.
Driven by international decarbonization policies and tightening emissions regulations across the aviation and maritime sectors, global demand is accelerating for key low-carbon energy carriers, including green methanol, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), bio-hydrogen, and circular carbon-based fuels.
The European Union has recently advanced its Hydrogen Mechanism, further strengthening market coordination for hydrogen and its derivatives. Within this framework, green methanol has emerged as one of the key focus areas, reflecting growing interest from both supply-side developers and industrial buyers.
At the same time, global shipping companies are increasingly accelerating their transition toward low-carbon fuels. Industry leaders such as Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM are actively investing in dual-fuel and alternative-fuel vessels, particularly methanol-ready fleets, in response to tightening IMO carbon regulations and rising long-term carbon costs.
Similarly, the aviation sector continues to expand its adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), as regulatory frameworks and net-zero commitments drive strong demand for scalable low-carbon aviation solutions.
These developments reflect a broader structural shift: biomass is no longer viewed solely as an energy source for electricity or heat generation, but is increasingly recognized as a sustainable carbon source within the emerging global low-carbon fuel system.
Through the integration of biomass resources, renewable electricity-based green hydrogen production, and carbon recycling technologies, new industrial pathways are being formed to produce green methanol, SAF, and other advanced synthetic fuels.
In this context, the ASEAN region is gaining increasing strategic importance due to its abundant agricultural residues and biomass feedstock resources, positioning itself as a potential growth hub for green fuel production and circular carbon economy development.
The ABEE - ASEAN Biomass Energy Expo 2027 will continue to focus on emerging sectors including green fuels, SAF, green methanol, bio-hydrogen, waste-to-energy, and circular carbon economy technologies, supporting industry collaboration across the global energy transition.
