Most discussions around Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) often focus on policy targets and production ambitions in Europe.
But when we look at the supply chain, a more global picture emerges.
Southeast Asia is playing an increasingly important role in the bio-SAF ecosystem.
Countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam offer strong advantages in feedstock availability:
• Palm oil derivatives
• Used cooking oil (UCO)
• Agricultural residues such as rice husk and biomass waste
These resources are already part of the global SAF value chain, supporting production pathways that serve international aviation demand.
As SAF demand grows under global decarbonization targets, feedstock availability and scalability are becoming just as important as production technology.
This is gradually shifting the conversation:
From "where SAF is produced"
To "how global feedstock and production networks can scale together"
In this context, Southeast Asia is emerging as a key contributor to the broader SAF ecosystem — alongside Europe, the US, and the Middle East.
The future of SAF will likely be defined not by one region, but by integrated global supply chains and cross-regional collaboration.
On this note, we are also working closely on advancing these conversations through the ABEE-ASEAN Biomass Energy Expo 2027.
ABEE brings together stakeholders across the biomass, bioenergy, and emerging SAF value chain — from feedstock suppliers and technology providers to project developers and investors — to explore how Southeast Asia can further strengthen its role in the global energy transition.
