Rice Husk Biomass Power: A Real-World Case Driving ASEAN’s Energy Transition

Date:2026-04-17

The Hau Giang Rice Husk Biomass Power Plant in Vietnam represents a clear signal of how agricultural waste is being transformed into stable baseload power across Southeast Asia.

With a capacity of around 20MW, the project demonstrates how rice husk — once an agricultural residue — is now becoming a strategic energy resource in the Mekong Delta region. Beyond electricity generation, it reflects a broader shift toward localized, low-carbon energy systems powered by agricultural economies.

From an engineering perspective, such projects typically integrate a full value chain:

  • Biomass fuel supply from rice mills and agricultural processing facilities

  • EPC execution led by regional power engineering contractors

  • Advanced boiler, turbine, and emission control technologies supplied by global OEMs

  • Grid integration through national utilities

  • Increasing interest from carbon and ESG-driven stakeholders

This structure is not unique to Vietnam — it reflects a wider ASEAN trend where Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia are building scalable biomass ecosystems based on agricultural residues such as rice husk, bagasse, and palm kernel shell.

This is exactly the transformation we aim to accelerate at ABEE-ASEAN Biomass Energy Expo 2027.

ABEE brings together the full biomass value chain, including:

  • Project developers and IPPs

  • EPC contractors and engineering firms

  • Technology providers (boilers, turbines, emission systems)

  • Industrial energy users

  • Policy, investment, and carbon market stakeholders

We are also engaging with regional energy and industry stakeholders, including organizations such as EGAT, Thailand Ministry of Energy (MOE), ASEAN Centre for Energy, and the Asian International Trade & Investment Association, to strengthen cross-border collaboration in clean energy deployment.

These partnerships reflect a shared objective: accelerating practical biomass deployment across ASEAN's industrial and agricultural sectors.

As ASEAN moves toward a more resilient and diversified energy mix, biomass will continue to play a critical role in bridging agriculture, industry, and power generation.

Join ABEE 2027 to connect with the key players shaping the region's biomass energy future.
