Turning Municipal Waste into Renewable Power: Thailand's Waste-to-Energy Opportunity and Why It Matters for ASEAN

Date:2026-03-04

Across Thailand, a wave of community waste-to-energy (WTE) projects—led by Thachang Green Energy Public Company Limited (TGE)—is converting municipal solid waste into clean electricity across multiple sites in Sa Kaeo, Chai Nat, Ratchaburi, Chumphon, and Samut Sakhon provinces. These projects represent a combined installed capacity of nearly 40 MW and are supported by long-term power purchase agreements with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).

Developed under Build-Own-Operate (BOT) contracts, the projects are backed by domestic capital and national renewable energy mandates. Commercial operation is scheduled between 2024 and 2026, delivering predictable returns while addressing local waste management challenges.

Thailand’s WTE sector is entering a more mature phase, with active participation from advanced technology suppliers, including SUS Environment’s combustion systems and global equipment partners such as Kanadevia Inova and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The sector is also characterized by high-standard emission control systems and integrated operation and maintenance solutions that comply with stringent regulatory requirements.

Why ASEAN Energy and Waste Infrastructure Stakeholders Should Pay Attention

• Strong government alignment: The combination of national policy support, long-term PPAs, and regional development plans is accelerating investment in waste-to-energy projects across Thailand.
• Robust value chain participation: From financiers and EPC contractors to technology providers and waste service operators, the sector offers multiple entry points for international collaboration.
• A scalable model for ASEAN markets: As regional demand for sustainable power generation and cleaner urban environments grows, Thailand’s WTE experience provides a practical blueprint and momentum for replication across ASEAN.

ABEE 2026 – Where Solutions Meet Opportunities

Advised by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the Ministry of Energy of Thailand, and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), ABEE – ASEAN Biomass Energy Expo 2026 will bring together technology innovators, EPC specialists, policymakers, and project investors from across the biomass and waste-to-energy value chain.

From strategic partnerships to advanced technologies, ABEE 2026 serves as a gateway to Thailand’s growing WTE market and the wider ASEAN energy transition.
