Big Moves in Southeast Asia's Biomass Market

Date:2025-05-20

Japanese renewable energy developer Erex has officially started commercial operations at its first biomass-fired power plant in Vietnam — a 20MW facility in Hau Giang province that runs on 130,000 tons of rice husks annually. The project operates under Vietnam's feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme and marks a major milestone in sustainable energy development for the region.

But that's just the beginning: Erex is now building two 50MW plants in northern Vietnam (due by mid-2027), and aims to develop up to 18 plants across the country, along with five in Cambodia. The company is also ramping up wood pellet production, with 20 factories planned in Vietnam and more in Cambodia. Its first 150,000 t/yr facility has already gone online this March.

By 2030, Erex expects profits from Vietnam and Cambodia to account for over 50% of its total earnings — a clear sign that Southeast Asia is becoming a central hub for biomass innovation and clean energy investment.
